Design: Maintaining Samsung's minimalist approach, the Samsung PN50B650 looks sleek and simple. While it still follows the Touch of Color design there is only a hint of red in the frame for a more subtle effect. The panel is glossy black with the usual curve to the bottom which leads to the glass topped stand, allowing the frame to swivel side to side.
Specifications: Featuring a 50 inch plasma screen with 1920x1080 a resolution and a 600Hz refresh rate to reduce blurring, the Samsung PN50B650 can handle 1080p/24 sources. Connection-wise the HDTV offers three HDMI ports, two component-video inputs, one VGA port, one RF input for cable and satellite, an Ethernet port, one stereo analog and one optical digital audio output. A side panel offers another HDMI, 2 USB ports and a AV input.
Features & Performance: The Samsung PN50B650 retains the same menu and remote as last year's model which is good since both are easy to use. With an Internet connection plugged in via the Ethernet port you can get Yahoo Widgets and other online streaming content. You can also hook up via the USB ports with a flash memory drive or digital camera.
The HDTV offers a lot of picture tweak options including four adjustable picture modes, five color temperature presets, three levels of noise reduction, a film mode to engage 2:3 pull-down, a seven-position gamma control, a dynamic contrast control, a black-level setting and there is also a color space control that lets you tweak the Samsung's color gamut. There is also a "screen burn" menu with many options to address the issue should it occur. Performance-wise the set scaled up to 1080p with no problems, delivering awesome color accuracy and smooth performance. With superb blacks the HDTV delivers a deep and rich shade of black making everything look more realistic.
Overall, the Samsung PN50B650 is an excellent mid-range plasma HDTV that offers and impressive and extensive feature set for all the control you could want or need. Its network connectivity and other features are great value-added extras.
